Fraktur wool hooked rug

"Robin Red Breasts" wool hooked rug copyright 2019
Illustration copyright 2010
#1 of 6 Fraktur theme rugs translated from my original illustrations.

I used #6, 7 & 8 cut (wool strips) for my model.
I have the second in the collection finished... I hope to share it tomorrow.
The designs are very similar to each other when drawn with
walnut ink and painted with watercolor...
They are so much warmer and rich with texture when hooked~
the wool rugs look completely different from each other!

I began drawing Fraktur and flourish elements in 1989 when I was a
graphic design student at R.I.T.
Through studying cobblestone structures for American Architecture I found
the most beautiful barns with hex signs and painted quilts.
With more research I became very distracted by Fraktur illustrations!

Fraktur sketches filled my notebook margins... ideas swirled in my mind!
I did my best to focus on the professors lectures...
I tried...
Through the years all of my college sketches,
interpretations from early works, have shared inspiration!
Inspired by the early treasures but never copied...
Nothing so beautiful as original frakturs and the history they recorded~
Illustrated history...
My frakturs, with a twist of whimsy, record favorite birds in
childhood gardens, perennial beds~ the beauty of season changes.

I draw my patterns by hand on primitive linen.
Finished rug size is 24" wide by 22" tall (actual hooked area)
3.5" to 4" border around the entire design
allowing ample room for your frame.
I take care to keep the lines straight of the grain.
Linen edges are taped to prevent fraying. I use green Frog Brand tape.
It is available through my Etsy shop:

Hope your week is off to a great start, Friends!
Thanks so much for stopping by~

Pen & ink harvest scarecrow

My walnut ink has sat idol for far too long~

Kept stored in air-tight containers...
It waits patiently.

Start at the top and work down...
Keeping the rest of my hand from smudging.

September has been lovely in Upstate New York~

Clear, starry nights...

Warm and sunny days~

Touches of color beginning to kiss the landscapes!

Hope you have a beautiful day!

Homemade Walnut Ink Tutorial

My batch of Walnut Ink was a grand success!
Goodness, I am in love!!
The most beautiful ink~

I have kept my ink 100% natural so far... have not added a mordant.
Just having a great time drawing, sketching~ experimenting with its richness!

These little friends are all drawn with the ink and my favorite dip pen...

I added touches of watercolor to a few of them...

She needed that little sweater this morning!
Brrrr!
Our first killing frost~ the 2013 growing season is over.
It was a long & bountiful harvest!

Walnut ink & this beautiful blue look so very sweet together~

So here is the 2nd part of my Walnut Ink process!
Outside... because I'm grand at making a mess & the ink WILL STAIN.

I scooped out some of the chunky pieces first.

Bowl that strainer will sit nicely in...

Add several layers of cheese cloth to the strainer.

Pour and allow the ink to filter through!
JOY!!!

Keeping every precious drop!

Look at that color!!!
Putting the ink into air tight containers...

Time to play!!!

A few different glass pens & the sample of their quality~
My treasured gold pen at the bottom!

As I was simmering the ink I took color samples...
This picture illustrates the ink strength!

I am so glad I saw Sharyn Sowell's video about making Walnut Ink.
It was an simple process... the house smelled like a damp forest (mossy!) and
the results are absolutely amazing! GORGEOUS color, FANTASTIC quality!

Small, framed, walnut ink sketches are in my Etsy Shop~
I have several made to share as housewarming gifts, hostess and teacher gifts!
Time to think about Christmas gifts...
Snowmen...
It's cold enough to think snow!

Hope you're having a wonderful day, Sweet Friends!

Walnut ink~

Black walnuts...
Black walnut ink, soon!
I had to locate a nearby tree so that I could try to make my own ink!
Sharyn Sowell (amazing artist) inspired me to make a batch when I saw her tutorial:

The walnut husks need to be pretty icky...
I've been waiting for mine to darken down~
(photo below was a few weeks ago when I gathered them from a country road)

I like the smell!
Be careful... they will stain what they touch~

Simmer... simmer... simmer...
The house smells mossy!

After a few hours the color is already beautiful!
Will keep simmering our ink~
I'll share more photographs when it has reduced down.

Hope you're having a wonderful day!
