Wool hooked rug Valentine

Happy Valentine's Day!
I hope your day is filled with sweet, sweet kindnesses~

Flow blue always warms my heart!
This wool heart is on the front of a project bag...
A class I took from Diane Phillips.
Everyone in the class had the same template~
It is always exciting to see how different & beautiful everyone's project is!

The night before the class I decided to make a test piece.
Still new(er) to rug hooking~ I'm never exactly sure how things will come together.
I wanted my color palette to be flow blue because I had
plenty of pre-cut wool strips.
These washy flowers could be made smaller or larger depending
on the bag template. Making a test piece helped me to get
a feel for how much wool would be required, too.

Still have plenty of these wool strips so I hope to
turn my little test piece into a small table runner.

Hope you're staying safe and warm through these winter storms~
Wishing your heart happiness, always!

Little Mouse punch needle~

"Spring Stitches" Little Mouse Collection copyright 2019

Hi Sweet Friends!
I hope your New Year is off to a great start~

My furry little friend has one of the coziest perches in the house!
How I love to gather and use vintage pincushions.
Especially tomato & strawberry pinkeeps.
Every sewing basket that I can remember (and there were a lot of them)
had a bright red tomato, with matching emery sand strawberry, tucked inside.
I would pull them out and straighten all of the pins~
Organize the straight pins by color, the needles by size.
Then I would dig to the basket bottom and find all of the buttons~
String them together with thread by size & type.
Gram, mom, neighbors & aunts were probably happy for a quiet minute!

This little Sparrow was a joy to design & punch~
It took me as long to add the mini pom pom trim and
flannel backing as it did to punch the entire piece!
I admire the talent and attention to detail that folks put into
finishing their works. I'm going to make a better effort to finish
each of my punch needle works a little differently.
I framed mine for years... dust free & protected from pets.

These snow friends are in the 2019 Christmas-Winter issue of
Punch Needle & Primitive Stitcher Magazine
I added a little tutorial on how I achieve a plush and velvety texture by
punching with a longer loop and snip the very tips off.

I found the vintage trim for 'Peppermint Stroll' at a local thrift shop.

Rug Hooking Magazine is celebrating their 30th year of publication!
I was honored when they asked me to share an
article and punch needle pattern~
Winter is so much warmer with these loud friends at the feeder!

Hope you're all staying cozy and that your hearts are happy~
Thank you for visiting, Friends

Antique and vintage linen treasures

 Winter whites warm my heart~
With some warmer days I started adding some forget me nots and hearts!

I know the winter winds will continue to bring storms and frigid temperatures~
For now we will enjoy a few warm moments & the whisper of Spring.

Hearts so tender~
I hope you have been enjoying this beautiful season!

This rooster piece became mixed in...
It was the perfect excuse to sketch a nesting hen!

It smells like forget me not weather~
I couldn't help but add a wreath of love!

Wishing you a joy-filled Holiday Season~
Praying that family and friends arrive safe and sound!
May wonderful new memories be written on your hearts~

Punch needle~ Chicks in the Tulip Patch

"Chicks in the Tulip Patch" copyright 2018 Michelle L. Palmer

Around the farm~
It is known when Momma Hen is spring cleaning!
Hen carefully tucks her baby chicks in tulip blossoms for safe keeping.
They enjoy the sway of the breeze and visit with passing bees!
Momma Hen will have new feathers tacked to the coop walls
when they return from their time in the garden~
Feathered friends stop by the coop throughout the winter to warm up.
They often lose feathers as they wriggle through the coop mesh...
It is always fun for them to identify bird friends & remember their visits.
Copyright Michelle L. Palmer 1998

A snippet from one of my stories inspired a sketch~
Sketch inspired a watercolor~ (Chicks in the Tulips have been painted several times)
I painted this watercolor in January & it inspired my punch needle piece.

Hope you're all staying strong and healthy & I hope some of your
winter days are sunny with blue skies~

Wishing you a creative weekend, Friends!

Valentine Punch Needle~

"Bluebird of Happiness" copyright 2018 Michelle L. Palmer

I have written two new punch needle patterns!
One is a free gift~ to thank you for sharing this wonderful
art journey with me! We have reached another milestone with our
Etsy shop and couldn't do it without all of you~

"Woolen Valentine" copyright 2018 Michelle L. Palmer

Our little woolen friend is the free pattern!
All of the pages & directions are here for your private use.

I have my finished heart hanging from a cupboard door handle.

Backed with a coordinating wool.
I used narrow strip of wool, twisted & stitched into place with floss.

The paper pattern with my color choices~
I can't wait to see what colors you design with!
This can be enlarged for a hooked wool piece or applique!

I trimmed my weavers cloth and then snipped the edges as seen above.
Careful to not cut too close to your loops.
With my finished work face down on a plush hand towel~
I steam pressed the weavers cloth to the back.
Loops are protected by the plush towel.

I use tracing paper to make a pattern for the backing.
Trace the heart from the paper pattern to cut your pattern.

You could add a little pocket to hold a note~
You could stitch a sweet message~

Thank you again~
Hope your February is filled with happiness & love!

Watercolor paintings~

How I love to bring some of my little sketches to full color!

It was fun to dress some of them up in ornate frames~

Bee skep & daisies bordered by a beautiful rose motif~

 Bluebirds of happiness!
You just know they love Valentine's Day~

These busy little springtime chicks...
Their momma tucked them in the tulip row while she cleaned their nest!
All of these loves are punch needle patterns~ I just need to get them written!

I've been so happy this winter... no sign of field mice making their way indoors!
We patched their secret entry and they get to live on~
A colder than normal winter so I toss cracked corn around
the bottom of the feeders and near the hedgerows for them.

Sweet friends sharing some love!

Hope you're having a great week, Friends~

Valentine Color Cards

I have my Valentine greetings back from the printer!
Added a touch of color with colored pencils to those I will mail to friends~
I will cut the edges with some fancy scissors and tack them to a pretty card stock.

I love to share cards and letters~
A little something in the post box for friends who live alone...
Share a hug with a heart that is hurting.
...and I LOVE to send Valentines!

This year I will send one of my hand-colored Valentines and
include a black and white Valentine for them to color~

Winter storms are brewing across the Plains, Midwest and Northeast...
Hope you all stay safe & warm, Friends!

Have a wonderful week!

Punch Needle Bee Skep Valentine

I think this will be the summer that I finally build a bee bole to house
my two favorite bee skeps. They have been part of our home decor
for 12+ years because they are made of natural materials.
They would rot when exposed to our weather.
I couldn't bring myself to put the hives/skeps in the garden because
I felt the bees would make it their home and then as it wore down
they would be without shelter.
I will find the perfect stones, study up on the weather side, air space needed etc.

These two bee Valentines are headed home for a nice bowl
of honey stew with a dash of daisy petals~
Home is where the heart his~

Hope you're having a great day, Friends!

Wednesday, February 1

Good Morning, February!

Sharing their hearts on this first day of February!

I have a collection of antique & vintage papers, books, magazines~
Some bins are filled with worn & tattered keepings.
The woman I got them from found value in them and
passed on that love to me!
They are bygone treasures~
Never to be printed again... some may be the only existing copies.

Bits and pieces put together with a new life!

When working with old paper I scan my final design and keep
a digital file. Old paper was made from various fibers, rag content etc.
and is not acid-free. It may yellow or stain other papers that it touches.
Enjoy the works you make & keep a fresh image for production.

Wishing you a February filled with love & happiness~

Wishing you a wonderful week~
