Rug Hooking 1889

I began gathering old paper in 1991. I was studying graphic design & advertising at
Rochester Institute of Technology and had a severe case of cabin fever.
There was an antique show near the college so I ventured off!
I walked into this one booth~ it was filled to the rafters with old paper & advertising.
That was the day I met Virginia~
Her paper collection was amazing (and she was only displaying a snippet!)
Most of the paper I have gathered is from the 1800's.

Virginia and I grew to be close friends.
We have known each other nearly 30 years!
When our daughter was in high school she came along to visit and talk paper.
We always went home with a box or two of treasures.
The time came when Virginia was ready to move into a retirement community.
She wanted to share more of her paper & mounds of knowledge with us.
The market had gone flat for paper... and we were willing to work & buy.

We spent many weekends through the better part of two years traveling
to help Virginia sort her inventory... listen, learn, gather seconds.
Always lunch at neat old nearby diners... maybe take a break & get a cone!
We would order enough  at lunch to have left-overs for dinner
as our visits would often go into the early morning hours with
a long drive home~
Our visits and stories are priceless...
Worth every penny & mounds of hours because one day,
Alaina was looking through a velvet covered family album & asked,
"Virginia, how much would you like for these old photo albums?
My dad has relatives by several names written here!"
She wanted to show her grandfather some of the pictures & names to compare!
Virginia couldn't sell them...
They were HER family albums!!!
Amazing how we're brought into peoples lives & then to discover seventeen years later
that this amazing woman and my husband are somehow related!
Our daughter made the connection!
Dean and I were dating when I first met Virginia.
We married a year after I graduated from college.
I missed our visits while I was expecting & then the newborn and early years
when money was extra-tight so visits were by phone.
Once they were both toddling around Virginia & I reconnected and
it was if no time had passed~
Hubby would plan a special day with our little ones so I could go visit 'Ginny!'

Virginia is a retired professor of Women's Studies, Literature, Writing...
Antique dealer, collector of all things Shaker~
as she spent all of her teaching summers in Maine with their community.
Almost 30 years of friendship and so much historic knowledge.
Alaina & Ginny would talk endlessly on women in history...
She would inspire Alaina, praise her for being unique and independent.
I was blessed to listen while sorting through floor to ceiling boxes of paper.
Virginia would notice something rare in my hand & explain the origin, purpose...

It will take me another 30 years to sort the paper I have acquired.
How I hope to remember the history lessons behind each piece!

While sorting for some pieces to share~
I recently came across this old E. Ross & Co. Rug Patterns catalog.
I LOVE wool hooking & it is so wonderful to see the gorgeous
works made through the years & today.. keeping this art alive.
I have shared some pictures from my booklet & I'm sharing a link.

If you click on the link it will bring you to a similar catalog~

Thank you for visiting, Friends!
I hope you have a wonderfully creative week~

Garden Peony prints~

Hello, Sweet Friends!
I hope you're having a wonderful day~

We are very soggy once again...
The rains have our flowers drenched & laying on the ground.

The Peonies were so very beautiful this year~
Just added these two prints to my 2nd Etsy shop!

I scan the vintage post cards & bill heads into my computer.
The originals are kept safe & restored.
I print the vintage images onto watercolor paper & then paint!

Thank you for all of your sweet comments & visiting here~
Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Art prints as artsy frames...

I have been adding new prints & original art to my 2nd Etsy Shop~
This new print is a lot of fun!

The little wren is happily perched on a vintage style tag!
The tag is printed from one of my antique ephemera files...
I cut the ephemera in the shape I wanted, punched a hole &
with watercolor aged the edges & painted a salmon-tone hole enforcer.

I like these vintage-style photo corners...
Most craft stores carry them~ sometimes they are in the fine art area.

One example of how you can "add" to my Wren print~
I found a vintage photograph of the dearest baby!
You could add graduation name cards, a little poem...
A sweet stitched piece...
A little love note~

I love vintage treasures~

A finished piece, ready to frame~

Another print I will add to my shop soon!

Hope your day is filled with fun and creative projects~
If the rain stays away I have squash to plant!

Vintage Ephemera~

The pages that they kept~
Shared chores, favorite pastimes...
Or were they an artist?
Saving the images for reference of times & styles?

A clip that looked like a baby sister,
A mischievous pup that always took their favorite toy?
Or how the artist captured the sweetest portrait of a child...
The adorable dress & hat of the young girl?

A gardener with cherished clips to cheer them through the winter?
An artist keeping plant reference?

Either way~ I am inspired and in awe of every little clip!
The dandelion prophet is very sweet~
They are all flowers to me!

Fruit seemed so much "juicier" as a child!
A bite into a fresh peach and my shirt was soggy~

Pages that tell a story...

This scrapbook artist captured my heart~
Images of flowers...
Dogs...
Children...
Dandelions!
A gentle reminder that I need to get laundry started...
Thankfully, no need to scrub in a tub!

I gather little snippets of joy~
Hope you do too!

Antique Pen & Ink Blotter, Glass Pens etc...

When folks share, "They don't make it like they use to..."
It is true with many art tools.
I'm very thankful for acid free papers and the longevity they promise~
Museum glass that protects valuable art and prints~
I'm thankful they left the minerals in paints... I promise not to eat mine.

I love hand-worked.
As much as I try to jump into the interesting & exciting tech world~
My heart returns to simple.

A young student looked at me and asked~
"Aren't you afraid of being left behind?"
Nope.
I love what I do.
Everyday I strive to improve my unique skills~
Try to share a little more of my heart in my work~

Heart.
Unique.

There are many artists in the world...
I admire the ones that search their own hearts and render unique.

These little glass gems are fun!
Metal tips have their own look~
When you find the perfect angle, point side etc.~ these pens dance!

Looking through antique/vintage ephemera can be daunting & dusty.
The finds are rewarding!

Old lesson pages are great tools!

Perhaps flourishes and scrolling were the Zentangle of our past?
I love watching people sketch, doodle, zentangle, pattern etc.

One of the most important things I try to teach my students...
Loosen up.
Let go of your wrist~
Let your hand move with your mind.

Hope your weekend is filled with creative!

Thank you~

"When my country's flag I see,
It always seems to say to me,
'Be brave and kind as you can be.' "

Martha Stewart Edge Punch Fun #3...

I just love the quality of these punches!
A sweet blogger friend asked if I had stock
in Martha's company~ heart stock!

Martha and her artists, creative group, amaze me...

I have been busy with work deadlines...
Having a great time sketching on fabric
whenever I get a free moment!
I wanted to toss something together quickly
just in case you had not seen these cute punches~

They are flexible, depending on your paper.
If you worked the paper fibers these would
probably even shape into a circle of chicks!

I remember humming this song when I was young.
Usually when I was doing my chores...
Especially weeding the garden!
Ugh... the veggie lines went on for days!

Without details...

With a quick line of green colored pencil...
Little black dots for eyes!
I think it looks cute either way~

Hope your day is happy!

Birds on a Wire...

I love gift cards to craft stores!
You know I love birds...

Found this sweet "Birds on a Wire" edge punch
from the Martha Stewart collection at Michael's.

First punch...

Line up with printed edge for second punch...

They're so sweet!

I used a page with tiny type...

A "good thing"...

The sides fold up!

Hope your Friday is wonderful~
