Treasures Even If Not Perfect...

A new stack of late 1800's ~ early 1900's papers.
These are the images I put in my journals...
One of a kind...
Treasured...
Weathered...

Someone took the time to cut these from
newspapers, magazines, trade journals etc. & saved.

Images from old books...

When I was in college I would go to antique shows
and drool over the postcards, vintage papers etc.
As a graphic designer...I LOVE to see all types of
borders, scroll work, print plates, type etc.
I would treat myself to a few postcards...
Almost 20 years later...still treating myself~
But there are less and less of these treasures...

Met a few people who had bags of 2nd's~
Images they couldn't ask top dollar for because they
were discolored, torn, mottled...
Be sure to ask...

Sometimes the aged pieces are still GORGEOUS!
Worth more than top dollar to me~
It takes a lot of effort to make things look old
without over-working the art.

Some of these images might be the
only one remaining...

Love that they even save the textured papers...
Must have been a gorgeous book~

If you find a booth with LOADS of postcards,
advertising pages etc. ~ be sure to ask if they have
torn, worn or damaged pieces they would like to sell...

  3. Treasures! The more worn and stained the better! Today's acid free papers will never achieve this lovely patina that we so cherish. Like you said, we have to work hard at faking it!

  4. OH MY! So do you photocopy them and keep the originals intact, tucked away somewhere?

  5. Ahh, my heart went pitter-patter seeing all those treasures. I have a huge soft spot in my heart for old papers and magazines. Your collection does look especially fine.

  6. Some originals go directly into projects...most of my tags, the vintage art in my journals etc. ~ I don't copy unless they are from the 1800's due to copyright respect. The ones I keep are in binders, journals, metal boxes etc.

I LOVE finding EARLY scrapbooks at antique shows/shops...can't afford them~ I look at them & think, "what are the people going to find from us, our generations...in another 100 years?" That's why I don't mind putting originals in journals. They'll always be treasured. First by the collector, writer, designer...then by the family member or friend who inherits or the person at the festivals that buys a treasure.

Thanks so much for your comments & questions! HUGS! Michelle

  7. Non-perfect - even better! (I buy chipped collectable pottery pieces - unloved by serious collectors, and much cheaper. Still gorgeous). I love love love paper ephemera. I have a bunch of vintage primers that are falling apart that I'm just waiting for the right project(s) to use them on.

Your gorgeous journals arrived by the way. Thank you so much. I love them.
